From marketing to recruitment 2.0

Imperial Recruitment

A few weeks ago I told you I was changing jobs. I left my job as a Digital Strategist at Adviso to be Digital Strategist at TMP Worldwide. At first glance it seems as though it’s not a major change, but it’s a decision that wasn’t easy to make. First because Adviso is a great online strategy firm, but second because it’s a complete change of industry — from marketing to recruitment.

What is TMP Worldwide?

TMP is an advertising firm that specializes in recruitment advertising. What does that mean? Instead of helping marketers achieve their branding and sales targets, we help HR departments with their employee branding and recruitment targets. We use most of the same online and offline tools. The world of recruitment, much like the sales and marketing world, has been completely turned upside down in recent years. Just think of how you got your last job vs. your first job. I know I got my first job through a posting at a University job board and this one because of my LinkedIn profile. My role is to help companies navigate this new reality. If you want to know more or chat a little more, feel free to email me at fabrice.calando @ tmp .com.

Why did I leave?

A big part of it is that I feel recruitment will be one of the major challenges of the next decade. A challenges that’s never really been seen before. On one hand, the state of the economy has taught companies to do more with less, yet on the other, we are entering a time when more people are retiring than new employees entering the workforce. On the employee side, our new connected world has made it easier for use to get in touch with like-minded people, start new businesses and skip the whole high-school > university > work > retirement framework. Gary Vaynerchuk just published his thoughts on the Education Bubble. It’s also exposing us to different opportunities at our disposal. We know that we can find an employer that will suit our needs and feed our aspirations.

As Gary Vaynerchuk mentions in The Thank You Economy, employees are the most important part of a company and so recruitment takes on an all new meaning. According to Gary a strong presence on social media can only be guaranteed by your employees. So the need to find employees that are the right fit is now more important than ever. Employers that do recruitment right will be the big winners and so will individuals — like you and me — who listen to what they really want to do.

I also find I’m personally well equipped to answer this challenge. I have 10 years experience in the fields of web, marketing and social media, but I’ve also had a lot of jobs and been to even more interviews during the past decade. I’ve worked for 8 different employers and held multiple positions at most of these companies. I’ve send the good, the bad and the ugly of the interview process, of working at large and small companies, of having no experience, of doing your own thing and working “for the man”… I think our new connected world will offer a lot of opportunities and challenges to both employees and employers and I wanted to be part of that.

So while Adviso is a great firm and if you need web strategy consulting, look them up. If you want to talk about recruitment and the digital landscape, let’s talk!

Have you had major changes recently? How did you deal with them?
